Friday 22 June ~ Hilbre Island ~ speak to Derek, please

On Friday 22 June, Derek (0747 5300 007) will lead a moderate walk of around 10.5 miles, with approximately 95 metres of ascent ~ if there is sufficient interest.

Meet at Wirral Country Park, Station Road, Thurstaston, CH61 0HN at 10:30 ~ red pin on map below. Be warned that from Rawtenstall the journey time is approximately 1:30 hours with a distance of around 70 miles. There is a £2 charge for the carpark, but facilities, including a café, are available.

The Islands are cut off from the mainland by the tide for about five hours out of every twelve, therefore timing is important. As the saying goes ‘time and tide wait for no man’. In the old days groups of six and above needed a permit, but that is not now the case. Even so, my plans have been okayed by both ‘The Friends of Hilbre Island’ and the ‘Wirral Rangers Office’ ~ so there should be no problems. If you have not done this walk before, then I think it is something worth doing. The ‘Time Lord’ has been muttering on about doing Hilbre for some time, but her extensive holiday commitments appear to be getting in the way, and as I am getting increasingly concerned that my back legs may fail me soon, I thought I had better get on with it! Please bring plenty of water, a hat, and suntan lotion irrespective of the weather forecast ~ it can often be wrong!

If this walk appeals, then please let me know ~ thanks.

If in doubt ~ ask!

Dogs are only allowed on our Thursday evening walks, if the leader agrees in advance. This is for the safety & wellbeing of all concerned.

Please Note: We very much welcome new walkers with us, but would ask you to contact the walk leader beforehand, either to discuss the demands of the walk and what you need to bring, or simply to let the leader know that you will be joining us. If you are at all unsure of your capabilities, then ~ for everyone’s safety ~ we suggest you try one of our shorter walks, which take place on the third Sunday of most months and ~ from May to August ~ on the first and third Thursday evenings. See ‘Walks Schedule’ for details.

This map is very interactive ~ you can move the map around, zoom in or out, or click ‘View larger map’ for printing and/or getting directions.
