Barley & Christmas Lunch 20-12-17 – Leader Judy

Barley & Christmas Lunch 20-12-17 – Leader Judy

It seems to me that three lines from well-known songs perfectly sum up our day today: ‘Mud, mud, glorious mud’; ‘Food, glorious food’; and ‘We are family’, with the last one resonating particularly strongly with me.  Just look at the stats – 39 people walked, and 42 people sat down to eat Christmas lunch together.  Both of these figures are, as far as I am aware, records for Rossie Ramblers, and they reflect enormous credit upon leader Judy, organiser Linda, back marker in high-vis vest Derek, Chair Rosemary, and all those who turned out today, including Andy’s wife Patricia and Mike’s wife Janine, plus our very own Alan, of course.

But today was not just about numbers, it was about the camaraderie, the jolliness, and the general good feeling in the group, exemplified by the excellent quizzes and generous prizes provided during the meal by Rosemary and David H.  The fact that our table won both quizzes, and I drank a good deal of David’s sloe gin, has clearly had an effect upon my mood, but – regardless of that – I feel very privileged to be a member of such a great group of people.

It also seems that I have a secret admirer, for a very nice bottle of red wine was delivered to me via a circuitous route, so that I could not identify the giver, who simply described themselves as ‘an appreciative, avid reader’!  Whoever you are, your gift and your comments are very much appreciated, and I hope that you continue to enjoy our website.

Oh yes, the walk.  Judy led us past Lower Black Moss Reservoir, then we wandered towards Pendle Hill, taking a break en-route, when Judy very kindly distributed some wonderful home-baked frangipane jam tarts – yum, yum!  Then it was along the flanks of Pendle Hill,  past the Ogden Reservoirs, and back into Barley, where the staff of the Pendle Inn looked after us extremely well.  The weather was very mizzly, with a good deal of fog, so we didn’t see the promised lovely views, hence I have put one in that we missed.  Mark grabbed the camera again, and did a sterling job.  (BTW, doesn’t Mary look young without her specs?)

A brilliant day to end a brilliant year for Rossendale Ramblers.  May I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and healthy New Year.

    possible.

  2. Great leading once again Judy in difficult conditions. Derek took his role as back marker seriously even wearing a high vis vest! Many thanks Linda for arranging the meal. The day was a great success.

  5. Thank you for an excellent walk Judy, quite a feat managing all those walkers. It’s a pity the lovely views, which we enjoyed on our summer walk, were obscured by the mist.

I wish all our Rossie Ramblers family a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
