Holden 22-01-2017 – Oh deer, oh deer, oh deer!

Eight ramblers set off from Holden on a cold, bright, and dry January morning.  After a blip by the walk leader (me) – going into the wrong field – the walk smoothed out.  When reaching our first stop just after Lodge Farm, Joe spotted five deer in the same field, who stared at us, as we stared at them!

We were now in unspoilt countryside, peacefully quiet, with a wooded stream for company.  Now two more deer were seen – and heard as they barked, warning of our presence.  This is a lovely valley, passing by Beck Foot and finishing at Butter Fields,.  Half an hour later, we reached Shays, where we took our second break, with extensive views north, still in reasonably clear weather.

Carrying on, with about two thirds of the walk done, we came across two other walkers, the first and last all day.  Treat number three came just after Greaves Farm, when Joe spotted more deer in the same field as us.  This time two had antlers and were testing each other out, though not with full power.

A short time after, we reached journey’s end, having had an enjoyable walk through outstanding Lancashire countryside.  Holden Nursery café was full to the brim, with one hour waiting time, so we finished off at the excellent Shackleton’s Garden Centre in Chatburn.

  1. I think there are some shoots in Scotland that could do with hiring Joe! Looks like an excellent day was had by all. Good pic of the deer, dear.
