Hollingworth Lake 27-02-2017 – Leader Jean

Welcome back to Jean as walk leader, taking over at short notice, to start from Hollingworth Lake, although the walk could more appropriately be called “The Reservoirs Ramble”.

14 arrived at the start point, including Dave from Rishton, walking with us for the first time and hopefully to join us again in the future when work shift patterns allow.

We started off from Hollingworth Information Centre, picking up the Rochdale Way towards Rakewood, and then the Pennine Bridleway eastwards under the M62 towards Nicholas Pike, which we neatly skirted. From here we headed towards Ogden Reservoir and then Ogden. Coffee was taken in a sheltered dip. After briefly joining the Rochdale Road, we circled Rooden Reservoir, before again picking up the Rochdale Way passing Hanging Lees Reservoir to Piethorne Reservoir with Kitcliffe Reservoir also in view. After passing Norman Hill Reservoir, we headed towards Binns Pasture, stopping for a quick lunch in the chilly wind. We then crossed more moorland on paths none of us had been on previously, before dropping down towards Tunshill, then crossing over the motorway to return to the cars.

The forecast was not great, but, in the event, it was mostly dry although windy when exposed. Jean found some good paths, but total avoidance of mud proved impossible, although Roy was happy.

Coffee and cake / toasted teacakes were enjoyed in the warmth of the cafe.
Thanks to Jean for a lovely walk.
