Mytholmroyd short 07-06-2017 – Leader Rosemary

At Withens Clough Reservoir car park we separated from the main group and made our way along Cragg Road for a short distance, before taking a track off to the right.  There were panoramic views of Calderdale, which looked verdant and picturesque.  A leisurely lunch was taken, with Barry munching Nutella sandwiches.  He then proceeded to tell us that he has just learned about alpha males, and considers himself to be one, but we poured scorn on the idea!

A crossing of Bell House and Errington Moor then took place, the ground being very wet in places.  Barry managed to find some sphagnum moss, and one of his legs disappeared in the bog.  He managed to extricate his leg with stoicism – one of the qualities of a born leader!  Leaving the moorland, our journey continued, passing a property called Great Jumps!  The hamlet of Wood Top was then visited, which was a centre of hand loom weaving, producing fustian cloth.  Among the inhabitants was John Saltonstall, whose daughter Lavena later became one of the best known local suffragettes.  A dyeing factory was also located here.  We then walked down Park Lane to return to Mytholmroyd.  Here we looked at insect hotels in the railway station, as well as children’s pictures of nature.  Our walk finished with culture at the birthplace of Poet Laureate Ted Hughes.

It was a good walk, with much banter.  Many thanks to Jean who devised the walk and accompanied me on the recce.  I am grateful to Jenny for taking the photos, and also for her company.  Barry and Rob were also good walking companions.

A very enjoyable walk today, on what seems to be only good day of the week. Thanks Jean for devising the walk and to Rosemary for leading us. We had lots of banter and laughter on the way, just as a good ramble should have. Hope our alpha male managed to dry his boots out!
