BBQ + Bring & Buy – 16-06-2018

As I sit here gazing out at the warm sunshine, I wonder what it was that I did in my younger days to make the gods hate me so much that they arrange the only rainy day in the last 6/7 weeks to be on our BBQ date?  OK, it did not ACTUALLY rain for most of the afternoon, so we COULD have sat and shivered in the garden, but we fell soft and ate under cover, which was actually very pleasant.  It was also very cosy, as 35 people (plus our granddaughter) were very well fed and watered.  The quantity and quality of the items in the Jacob’s Join were brilliant, and the bring & buy table was groaning under the weight of all that had been brought to sell.  The total raised from the bring and buy (inc a donation by email) is a wonderful £173, which has now been sent to NW Air Ambulance.

The afternoon’s entertainment was a very interesting talk and slideshow by Rosemary – resplendent in her Shalwar Kameez – about her recent death-defying holiday in Pakistan, with a supporting act from Alison as a thunderstorm broke, and she very kindly raced around to retrieve some items that were under the weather!

All in all, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and the day was made much easier for me and Maureen by all the help we received from Ursula and Linda on the arrangements for the event, from those who brought extra chairs, from those who arrived early to set things out and tidy the area, from those who carried things upstairs and did the washing up, and lastly from David C for his gardening efforts prior to the day, and his hot sausage juggling act during the afternoon.

PS Someone left a pair of specs.

Mike & Janine commented by email – Well, rain certainly didn’t stop play! What a truly splendid afternoon. This is the first Rambler’s barbecue that Michael and I have attended and what a treat it was. It is such a warm and friendly group that I felt so welcomed even though I still don’t remember everyone’s names. (Sorry!)
The smell of barbecue smoke and onions drifted towards us as we walked along the road and we already felt peckish! The food was delicious and the Jacob’s Join table was groaning under the weight of so many delicious goodies to sample. We certainly had the lightest bite for tea after so many indulgences.
The weather didn’t dampen our enjoyment in any way. Michael and Roger F even managed to sit out on the patio for the brief duration of a sunny spell!
We thought Rosemary’s talk and slides were fascinating. Apologies for bursting through the door… We had no idea it was happening as we’d been chatting with Maureen in the kitchen.
Thank you to everyone for all their efforts and especially to Arnold and Maureen for wonderful hospitality.

So thank you to both of you.
