New Year Walk and Meal 06-01-2019 – Leader Angela

A Happy New Year to all Rossie Ramblers, and here’s to fantastic walking in great company during 2019.

This was a good start, with a turnout of 22 for our first Sunday walk and 25 for the meal after. Unfortunately the weather was disappointing with low cloud, mist and some drizzle, but our spirits were not dampened.  The photos testify to the difficult conditions and higher up the visibility was poor, posing some route finding challenges, but Angela coped admirably. A walk largely on the Rossendale Way seemed entirely appropriate today.

Angela led us from outside the Holden Arms, past the site of Holden Hall and past Mary’s Wood with the memorial bench, to Windy Harbour Farm, where we picked up the Rossendale Way, heading westwards. We went above Jamestone Quarry, and coffee was taken at Nab Hill, where another group of walkers appeared through the mist. Those at the back of this group were initially delighted until they realised it was not their group having a coffee stop! They were Sale Ramblers doing a similar distance and route, and we met up again later when some of their members became confused in the mist and joined our group (or maybe they thought we were better company!) Some repartee with fellow Ramblers is always good.  Shortly after the stop we cut down to cross the Grane Road, keeping on the Rossendale Way to head up towards Egerton Moss before cutting through the woods above Calf Hey and Ogden Reservoirs.  We then climbed to Musbury Heights and its chimney, leaving the Rossendale Way shortly after, before descending to return to our cars past Holden Wood Reservoir.

Here, some left us for other commitments, and the rest of us relocated to the Sykeside Hotel Restaurant, where others joined us, and we all had an excellent meal.

Many thanks to Angela for the walk and to Ursula for organising the meal.

I was very relieved to get everyone safely back without going wrong in such difficult conditions!

  2. Rosemary

It was great to be out in the countryside among friends at the start of the year. Many thanks to Angela for leading a local walk under difficult conditions. Judy’s write up reflected the walk well, backed up by photos. The meal was delicious & it was a very social occasion. Thank you Ursula for organising the meal.

Well done Judy on an excellent write up and decent pics in the conditions. Well done also to Angela for an interesting local walk and a good choice for lunch, with admin by Ursula.

Apologies to those who will be turning out on Wed for David’s walk, as you will be doing part of today’s walk again, but in the opposite direction. However, looking at the forecast, at least you will be able to see where you are going this time!
