Laycock, Goose Eye and Keighley Moor – 04/02/26 – Leader Alex
17 Ramblers turned out on a foggy, damp day. It remained so throughout.
Before setting off it was explained that the citizens of Laycock don’t seem to like picking up after their dogs. Forewarned we were able to successfully navigate without incident through Laycock and down to Goose Eye with it’s pub and brewery https://en.wikipedia.
Once through we located and followed Newsholme Dean past Teapot Dam. I have no idea why it’s called this, but did discover that its water supplied the paper mill in Goose Eye. Then on to Slippery Ford via Grey Stones Farm, with its interesting outbuilding under construction in a variety of exotic styles. It looks Arabic or Islamic, I can’t find any information on this however. More notable was the muddy and difficult path across a steep bank that followed. There were several complaints about this most of which were forgotten during the break that we took once out of it’s clutches.
Several stiles later we crossed Slippery Ford, now no longer slippery due to the new bridge supplied by Peak and Northern Footpaths. A short walk along the road brought us to the track up to Keighley Moor Res. Once across the dam we crossed the sometimes boggy moor to take our lunch break in the lee of a wall.
The way then entered fields and followed a “carpeted” farm track to cross more stiles and fields to reach Broadhead Lane which we followed before turning left just before the hamlet of Newsholme. A steep descent brought us into Newsholme Dean again via a very old and listed clapper bridge.
It was then a walk back to Goose Eye and a short steep ascent with the aforementioned hazards back to Laycock and our cars.

Thanks Alex for a great walk, even though there were quite a few comments on the terraine and weather. Great pics Vince, you did well considering the fog. As always Kev did a very good job at the rear.

Not so much ‘Gorilla’s in the Mist’, as Ramblers in the Mist’. A good walk though.
