Hawkshaw pub walk 23-05-2026 – leader Malcolm

This was our first summer Saturday pub walk since these walks started in 2018, and it was a cracker!  With a turnout of 16 walkers and 5 dogs, including the mighty Ralph, an English Cream retriever, it was very chatty and sociable from the beginning.  With us today were Jacqueline and Rebecca, who joined the ramblers on the day after doing the Friends of Bocholt walk with Judy in April.  We hope to see them again.  Also with us today were 4 (I think) doughty members who were on the group’s holiday in Sedbergh, which ended yesterday – heroes!

From the pub it was over the road to head down Two Brooks Lane for a while before kicking left towards the fields, with the dogs negotiating the ladder stile with varying degrees of athleticism.  It was then across a field full of bullocks, one of which was particularly curious/friendly to Judy and yours truly.  Sensibly, the dog walkers took the long way round to reach the path to the delightful Croichley Fold – featured pic.

Over the main road again and up towards the army training camp. where the squaddies were doing a bit of drill.  A diversion took us then across more fields, to come out into an area with lovely views all around.  Shortly after, Ralph spotted an inviting small pond, into which he sank with gratitude, to be joined moments later by the other 4 dogs – sheer bliss 🙂  The views continued as we headed up to Top o’ Quarlton, where we turned left on the lane, soon to encounter a couple of well-kept memorials to 3 members of the Shortt family, about which I could find nothing.

Back to the main road, it was a short walk in the sunshine back to the pub, where everyone came in, some for just a drink, but others for a meal, which was quickly served and much appreciated.  After an hour or so in the pub, we bid our farewells and set off home after a lovely morning, thanks to leader Malcolm, back marker Glyn, and all the chatty folk who came.
