Burrs Country Park 14-06-2026 – leader Steve S

On what turned out to be an ideal day for walking, five walkers met at Burrs Country Park. We welcomed Lee, who had not been put off by his inaugural Rossendale Ramblers walk last Wednesday, and also Stewart from Bury Ramblers.

After a brief description of Burrs’ industrial past, we followed the route of the Sculpture Trail along the River Irwell, climbing up from the weir. We walked parallel to the East Lancs Railway, but always in the wrong place, at the wrong time to see the Flying Scotsman go by. Making our way to Summerseat, we arrived at the recently nicely refurbished Brooksbottom Cricket Club. Crossing Rowlands Road, we walked down Queens Place to Summerseat Island. There, a large group of young and adult budding beekeepers were having tutoring. We passed a group of young riders having fun on the BMX track, and walked on a little to find a couple of benches for elevenses.

We then crossed the bridge past the site of the Waterside pub, washed away in floods, Boxing Day 2015. Heading up behind The Spinnings apartments (a former spinning mill), we walked on to emerge at the site of the now almost finished United Utilities flood defence. Navigating our way around the site, we walked on to a busy Nuttall Park to enjoy lunch.

We left Nuttall Park and made our way along Nuttall Hall Road, up Bury New Road, turning right at the top, we walked along the busy A56 Manchester Road. Crossing the road, we headed up past Park Farm, to be greeted by hens and four noisy piglets. This path brought us out onto Bury Old Road, Nangreaves. From there we headed along the road into Nangreaves Village, before descending down to the A56 Walmersley Road. Here Stewart left us to catch a bus home. The remaining four crossed the road to Falshaw’s Farm to enjoy ice creams.

From Falshaw’s we walked a short way along Rowlands Road, turning left we headed past the former Chest Wheel Farm back down to the village link and sculpture pathway, past the circus big top and on to our start point.
