Worsthorne 05-08-2026 – leader David R

How the weather can change! On a blustery day, 14 Rossie Ramblers met up in the centre of Worsthorne. After the customary group photograph we set off up the stony pathway known as Gorple Rd. Near the end of Gorple Rd we took a sharp right to pass down the right hand side of Hurstwood reservoir. At just over 100 years old, the reservoir supplies Burnley from the 300 million gallons it holds, although at present the levels hold nothing like that volume. We continued further to reach the 16C hamlet of Hurstwood containing several grade 2 listed buildings including Hurstwood Hall, built in 1579 for Barnard Towneley. 

Our next pathway to travel was Burnley Way which also crosses Long Causeway. At this part of the walk we were descending down toward Holme Chapel which has numerous Grade 2 listed properties including Church of St John the Divine where we enjoyed our luncheon break. Leaving Holme Chapel and continuing under the railway line and Burnley Way we eventually reached the small village of Cliviger and then entered Towneley Park. Continuing uphill along the side of a recently built housing estate we crossed Red Lees Rd reaching Salterford Bridge and back into Worsthorne.

Stats – The walk was recorded at 10.3 miles with ascent of 1350 feet.
