Barrowford – 01/07/26 – Leader Ian

An excellent turnout saw 19 ramblers meet at the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford for an enjoyable day’s walk.

 

Leaving the car park, we followed the Pendle Way alongside the river, passing Higherford Old Bridge before crossing at Water Meetings. From there, we made our way through Beverley and climbed Blacko Hill, stopping for a well-earned elevenses at the closest point to Blacko Tower.

 

Continuing along the Pendle Way through Sandyford, we visited the trig point on Weets Hill, where the splendid 360-degree views gave everyone an excuse to pause and take in the scenery. Lunch was enjoyed where the Pennine Bridleway crossed our route before we descended through Salterforth to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. As if on cue, the sun even made a brief appearance!

 

The return to Barrowford followed the towpath, taking us past both ends of the Foulridge “Mile” Tunnel and we traced its route from above. A final descent past the Barrowford Locks brought us back to the Pendle Heritage Centre, where several of the group rounded off the day with tea and cake.

 

Despite a persistent threat of rain, the weather was kind to us throughout, and waterproofs stayed firmly in our rucksacks.

The walk covered approximately 11 miles, with just over 1,000 feet of ascent.
