Simon’s Seat 29-07-2026-Leader David C
On a warm overcast morning, 20 ramblers squeezed into the layby at Barden Bridge, the decision for an early start was definitely the right one as Malcolm and Katie managed to get the one remaining space
The route led us north on the Dales Way along the River Wharfe for a couple of miles before turning east and gently upwards at Howgill Farm, and then more steeply through woodland and onto the open access land of Barden Fell, where we had our coffee/ banana break. The walk continued with good views across the valley to Burnsall Fell. We then continued upwards to Simon’s Seat itself (485 m), where the more agile and willing climbed up to the trig point. The views down from the top were impressive, as ever. We crossed the fell to Lord’s Seat, and then we descended across Barden Fell – now in warm sunshine – to take lunch in a sheep fold complete with table!
Coming off the Fell, the path was tricky and overgrown through Sheepshaw Plantation and unfortunately Snipper Steve had put his secateurs away in his rucksack. The Valley of Desolation is not very desolate now, full of new growth. A few walkers took the opportunity to descend a steep path down to a waterfall – nicely full of water, and children. Following Posforth Gill, we left the main Bolton Abbey estate to take a concessionary path through Strid Wood, viewing the Strid where the River Wharfe shrinks from 27m to 2m to pass through a narrow gap, the stretch carries a high mortality rate for anyone who falls in. A lovely stroll along the river bank took us back to the cars and the waiting ice cream van, where everyone took the opportunity to purchase an ice cream ending a really lovely walk, thanks to all who came.
