Belmont – 25/10/26 – Leader Roy

Water Water Everywhere
13 Intrepid walkers including our leader Roy, met at the Wilson Arms Pub at Belmont whilst storm Boelo tried its best to deter them. From the Wilson Arms we set off walking along Belmont Road towards Bolton, before taking a left turn down the fields to bring us to a track that the overnight rain had turned into trenches. Then we continued along the lane passing Gleaves Reservoir to bring us to Dunsker Golf club where we found a disused wind turbine that used to generate electricity for something unknown.

We continued along the lane in the shelter of the hill with very little wind, after crossing Belmont or Eagley Brook (that’s its name) we climbed upwards back into the wind up to Longworth Road North. Which we followed for about 500 metres before turning right along side Delph Reservoir sheltered from the wind by the high wall, along here we came across a horse a donkey and a Shetland pony with the same idea of sheltering from the wind. Another half Amile brought us to Walmsley Unitarian Chapel and School house, then it was on skirting along the back of Delph reservoir to bring us to stone bank Quarry where lunch was taken using the hillside has shelter from the wind.

Then we set of again along a well- maintained path, to bring us back to Longworth Road North. Before we crossed Roy warned us that on the other side was a very tricky steep descent down, he wasn’t exaggerating. But eventually we all made it to the bottom unscathed, and to have the obligatory bridge shot over the rather raging Belmont or Eagley Brook.

We then followed the brook for a while before a steep climb up to Dingle Reservoir, which we then walked up a lane up toward Belmont Road. Oh, joy nearly back and hardly any mud, but Roy wasn’t going to let us get away with hardly any mud. So, we turned left back down a field that with all the rain was rather muddy, it was then over a stile into more mud, we then dropped down to Gale Brook which we crossed to pass through a field to bring us to Fernhill farm and a rather shy Horse called Bob. From here it was back to Belmont Road and to the cars.
