Birtle pub walk 03-10-2026 – leader Bernie
On a lovely morning, 15 walkers and 2 dogs turned up at the Pack Horse in Birtle, inc Karen & Dominic on their first walk with us. They were made very welcome, and came into the pub afterwards, so we hope that is a good sign!
Bernie had promised a different walk from this pub, but confessed that she had an unsuccessful recce the day before, so she decided to do the same walk as before, but the wrong way round, which was an excellent choice.
Quite soon after setting out, Dominic discovered that one of his boots was coming apart, so he had to go back to change. A little further on, Bernie waxed lyrical outside a house called Smileywood, telling us that it was the childhood home of local comic legend Victoria Wood – but Victoria Wood’s house was further on – see featured photo. Along the way, John C was bitten on his elbow, and Bernie administered some magic cream, so he survived.
And we all survived for the rest of the walk, with lovely views over Walmersley Golf Course to Holcombe Hill, saying hello to some friendly donkeys, navigating the muddy bits of Scotland Lane, chatting to some Duke of Edinburgh hikers, and finally back to the pub, avoiding many horse riders and cyclists en route.
A very chatty hour or so was spent in the pub, with good food – generally served quickly! – and conversation before bidding farewell until the next one – see below. Thanks to Bernie for a smashing and amusing walk, to Glyn for back marking, and to all who came for their company.
The next pub walk will be on Saturday 17th October, starting at 10.30am from an as yet undisclosed pub. Full details will be on this website and our Facebook page a week before the walk.
