Bold Venture to Darwen Tower. 28.06.2026 Leader Roy

After the recent heatwave it was a welcome change to be starting a walk in much fresher conditions. The forecast was for dry weather after 10’ish but the rain had one last attempt as 14 ramblers gathered near to the gates of Bold Venture Park in Darwen.

At the gates Roy gave a brief talk about the history of Bold Venture Park, opened in 1889 on the site of a former quarry. After the group photo we made our way through the picturesque ornamental gardens then uphill through woodland before reaching the edge of Darwen Moor. At this point we all agreed the rain showers had passed over and waterproofs were subsequently removed.

Continuing onwards, a wide track led us gradually up hill to reach Darwen Tower, where we had a brief stop for some to climb to the top of the tower, to enjoy the views-albeit breezy on top, while others took the opportunity for an early coffee break on ‘ground floor level’.  

After re-grouping we continued along good moorland paths, which offered good views over to the coast, then eventually descending alongside Stepback Brook. Here Roy mentioned a Peak & Northern Footpath Society sign and how we can leave a legacy to help with their footpath and signage improvements.

Shortly after, a good spot was found for lunch stop, then we made our way along a farm road which led us round to Earnsdale Reservoir. After crossing the reservoir dam, a right turn took us through Sunnyhurst Woods on the Witton Weavers Way. From Sunnyhurst we made our way up Turn Lane, eventually leading us back round to Bold Venture Park.
