Helmshore pub walk 07-11-2026 – Leader Bernie
On a cool and misty morning, 15 walkers and 3 dogs turned out at Helmshore Textile Museum. It was really nice to see Philip out with us again after a very nasty leg break not too long ago – and I’m not talking cricket! Leader Bernie leapt around, taking lunch orders as people arrived, and then we set off. Initially we were up the big steps to the disused railway line, along which we walked for a while before dropping down to cross a stream, a field, and the road.
The climb of the day then began, on tarmac as we wound around to the end of Holden Wood Reservoir, which was like a mill pond today. Along the way we encountered quite a realistic, full size Halloween statue that was quite spooky. Soon we turned off onto a cart track leading up to the Musbury Quarry workings, at which point Bernie said the climbing was over, for which one or two were grateful 🙂
After crossing the quarry workings, we were out in the open, with extensive – though misty – views. We dropped gradually down over the moor and under Tor Hill to reach Musbury Brook, which we followed to Carr Lane and down to Helmshore. After passing a huge new apartment block under construction, we reached the main road, where we said farewell to some of the group, while the other 10 took lunch at The Village.
Food and drinks were served commendably quickly in this quite busy restaurant, and the social chit chat lasted an hour or so until we all departed after an extremely pleasant morning thanks to Bernie, to Jan for back marking, and to all who came for their company.
The next pub walk will be on Saturday 21st November, starting at 10.30am from the Hare & Hounds, Holcombe Brook. Full details will be on this website and our Facebook page a week before the walk.
