Members who have passed away

Ken Talbot d. 3.9.2022

Ken was a great outdoorsman who loved climbing and did some epic stuff on the crags and mountains, both at home and overseas. These included an ascent of The Matterhorn and several other Alpine giants, the challenging north side of Ben Nevis and most of the Munros.

He was an accomplished fell runner who completed many long races in the Lakes, Wales and Scotland and was a regular in the two-day Karrimor Mountain Marathon.

On his retirement, Ken enjoyed many years walking with Rossendale Ramblers.  He is remembered for his boundless love of the mountains and his infinite enthusiasm for life.

Jim Rostron d. 25.1.2022

Jim was 93 when he passed away in January 2022.  He and his late wife Bertha were active members of the group in the late 1990s.  They were experienced mountaineers and strong walkers, and led walks for our group.  A walk with Jim was never dull, as he would regale us with many stories of adventures experienced by them on the hills and mountains.  They shared a deep love of the Scottish Highlands and climbed many of the mountains.  Jim was also a keen ornithologist, and his binoculars would be passed around on a walk if something of interest had been spotted, such as dotterels on the top of Pendle.

Jim was kind and was always willing to share his experience and knowledge.  He greatly enjoyed the camaraderie of our group.  He loved his home on the hillside in Rossendale and would  often greet us if we passed on a walk.  He will be greatly missed.

‘The birds have vanished down the sky.

Now the last cloud drains away.

We sit together,  the mountain & me,

until only the mountain remains’

Susan Holden d. 25.4.2021

Sue will be remembered for her enthusiasm and love of the countryside.  She was kind, thoughtful, and enjoyed the camaraderie of the group.  She also managed to wear her colourful walking clothes with style.

On 12 September 2021, we had a walk in one of Sue’s favourite areas of the Yorkshire Dales to remember the time that we spent with her in the countryside.

“The fleeting hour of life of those who love the hills is quickly spent, but the hills are eternal.  Always there will be the lonely ridge, the dancing beck, the silent forest; always there will be the exhilaration of the summits.”

Alfred Wainwright
