Sunday 20th September – Barley and The Clarion

Sunday 20th September – Barley and The Clarion

On Sunday, 20th September, Gill (07791 086395) and Tom will lead a 6.5 mile Grade 2/3 walk from Barley.

Starting from the car park (SD823403; N53°51?31” (N53.858618), W02°16?14” (W2.270590); What3words hardly.doll.incorrect; nearest postcode BB12 9JX) at 10 a.m. we will head north east past the Black Moss reservoirs and onto Stang Top Moor from where we will drop down to Roughlee.  A short section of road past the Alice Nutter statue will then bring us to a rise up to Noggarth Cottage from where we will go back down to Clarion House for a brew before heading back to the cars. Total ascent 938 ft.

It’ll no doubt be muddy at times, but hopefully assuaged by fabulous views – provided the weather is kind.

Please note that the car park at Barley takes payment by cash, card or online. There is number plate recognition on entry and payment (on exit) for the day is £3. You could, of course, park on the road.

Hazards: a few stiles, some boggy ground, some mud.

The pace will be gentle and we should be back at the cars about 1.30 ish depending on our time at Clarion House. Should you wish to purchase anything (a brew/chocolate/sweets) at Clarion House you will need cash – it’s the princely sum of £1 for a pint of tea. There are toilets at Clarion House and at Barley car park and there is a cafe at the car park (other venues are available in the village for more substantial food)

This walk is free, but after 3 walks with us you are asked to join The Ramblers, at a cost of only £3.58 per month for an individual, or £4.83 for joint membership.

Please note the following important points:

  • Prior booking is mandatory via this link. This enables walk leaders to organise their walk, in line with the number attending.

  • Each individual walker must be on a separate booking, but if a walker does not have an email address, a friend or family member can book them on using their own email.

  • Booking closes one hour before the walk starts.

If you have any queries about coming on this walk, please contact the walk leader on the number above. If you have booked on and are unable to attend, please inform the walk leader before the start of the walk.

Safety: We very much welcome new walkers with us, but would ask you to contact the leader beforehand to discuss the demands of the walk and what you need to bring. If you are at all unsure of your capabilities, then we suggest you try one of our shorter walks – see Walks Schedule for details.  Please note our safeguarding policy regarding children and vulnerable adults, and note also that dogs are only allowed on our 2 hour pub walks.

This map is very interactive – you can move the map around, zoom in or out, or click ‘View larger map’ for printing and/or getting directions.
