Holcombe pub walk 07-03-2026 – leader Josie

On a slightly cool but pleasant morning, 16 walkers and 2 dogs arrived at the Shoulder of Mutton in Holcombe Village.  Cathy was a new walker with us, while Alison and Susan had not been with us for a while, so it was lovely to see them all.

Crossing over from the pub, we followed Cross Lane to our left, passing some rather nice properties, before veering round onto Moorbottom Road as the views opened up to the south.  This undulating and bumpy track took us to the fringe of the MoD firing range – but no for us today.

Instead, we headed steadily upwards onto the moor side, before levelling out and taking a track that led us across a slightly boggy moor to the Pilgrims’ Stone, with 360° views.The walk then took us over a flagged path towards Peel Tower, with some more undulations.  Before reaching the tower, we veered off to reach a disused quarry with some quite mighty rocks, and were soon back at the pub.

One or tow said farewell a this point, but most came in for coffee and/or a meal, and we had a more than pleasant 90 minutes of chat before departing.  Thanks to Josie for a cracking route, and to all who came for their company.
