Ainsworth, 31.05.26 – leader Roy

On an overcast but dry morning 11 ramblers met in front of the Duke William Inn, Ainsworth. After the group photo, we set off through the village passing the Presbyterian Chapel and Hook’s Cottage. A narrow path led us alongside George’s Wood then out to open views across meadows. From Cockey Moor, our route led us up to Lowercroft Reservoirs, and then a steady up hill to Barrack Fold, where we noticed the recently converted stables and farm buildings.

After crossing Arthur Lane we made our way round through Breightmet Golf Club where we found a pleasant spot to stop for lunch, beside a former mill lodge – now a fishing lake. On reaching Bottom o’ the Moor we then looped round through Dearden Fold, through back lanes, noticing old mill chimney stacks now in various states of decay – although one stack caught the interest of everyone …with THEMILL in large letters, which led to many suggestions on how it should be pronounced.

From Taylors Lane our route then turned on to Ashworth Hall Road, with another couple of twists and turns across meadows we were back at our cars in Ainsworth.
