Knott End 26.08.2026 Leader Sue

15 walkers met at Knott End free car park, where a few had arrived early and taken advantage of the cafe. After the obligatory start photo, taken with a matchstick man and his dog, a tribute to L.S.Lowry who enjoyed sketching here, we set off along the side of the river Wyre. We turned onto Knott End golf course leaving the estuary behind and after a couple of hiccups were soon heading over the course to the grade 2 listed Hackensall Hall which originates from the mid 1600’s. In 1926 a very large stash of 3rd century Roman coins were unearthed on nearby land.

Past the hall we followed a lane to Coat Walls farm with extensive fields of maize on either side. It was along here we met the falconer who had lost his bird on our recce and once found Stephen, Paul and I had our photos taken with the bird.

Carrying on we came to Preesall and the one hill of the day, it was here we took our coffee break. Crossing the village we made our way down the other side of the hill picking up a track leading past Nicholsons farm where we were greeted by at least 6 very vocal dogs, thank goodness they were on the other side of a fence. We continued on past some fishing lakes and farms to Muffy’s Platt. The walk slowed at times as people were gathering blackberries and enjoying eating them. After passing Carr House farm it was along a lane which led us to the coast where the tide was nowhere to be seen unless you had binoculars!! We did spot 3 egrets and I heard a peewit.

We found some steps leading down to the high tide line and made ourselves comfy on the rocks for lunch. The second bout of rain decided to try and spoil this stop, but we ate our food and enjoyed some banter, before following the tracks back to the car park.

11 walkers enjoyed a chat and refreshments in the very welcome cafe.
