Sunday 30th August – Downham

On Sunday, 30th August Gill (07791 086395) and Tom will lead a 6 mile grade 2/3 walk from Downham. Total ascent 900ft.

Starting from the car park (SD 784440; N53°53,33” (N53.8925502), W02°19,44” (W2.3288355); What3words pictured.shaver.corrode; nearest postcode BB7 4BT) at 10 am we will walk to Downham and Twiston Mills, before heading up towards Pendle (but not up it) and back to the cars via Worsaw End Farm and Cat Gallows Wood (or we may do it the other way round depending on the day!)

This is a fabulous walk, described in one book as ‘truly Arcadia’*; probably not if it’s tippling down, but if it’s a clear day you really will see awesome panoramic views of the Bowland Fells, the Yorkshire peaks and, of course, Pendle (which as you know, is so good they named it thrice).

There are a few toughish ups and downs, but there’s an ice cream shop at the end which help you forget those. Either that or the pub…..

Hazards: nettles, a bit of mud, a few dodgy areas where the overgrowth is hiding roots and stones, a potentially slippy up (or down) where the grass has worn away, an awkward wall stile.

The car park is free and there are also free toilets in the converted pig pens. Downham is a beautiful village and worth seeing if you haven’t been before. There is the aforementioned ice cream shop and the Assheton Arms if you want to book lunch afterwards.

This walk is free, but after 3 walks with us you are asked to join The Ramblers, at a cost of only £3.58 per month for an individual, or £4.83 for joint membership.
