Barrowford – Barley circular 09-08-2026 Leader Glyn
On the morning of 9th August, a pleasant Sunday with no rain forecast, but starting a little chilly, 12 walkers met at the Barrowford Heritage Centre for the start of the walk. Crossing the car park we walked along the side of Pendle Water, crossing the A682 into Foreside and onto Barleydale Road. At Water Meetings we crossed the bridge and turned left to reach a small footbridge. Having crossed it we climbed the short hill, and on reaching the top it was a flat walk to Blacko Bar Road which we crossed to Bank End Farm. After a few ups and...

We were blessed with a beautiful evening for our final Thursday evening walk of the year. One dog and 11 ramblers turned out and were led down from the pub, over the M66, past the Paddock campsite, and through to the bridge over the Irwell at Stubbins. We passed the delightful cottages on the riverside, now sans the gorilla statue, but with a group of hungry chickens instead. After navigating the rather dark tunnel under the disused railway, David told us that we were now at the site of Stubbins Station on the Accrington to Manchester...

How the weather can change! On a blustery day, 14 Rossie Ramblers met up in the centre of Worsthorne. After the customary group photograph we set off up the stony pathway known as Gorple Rd. Near the end of Gorple Rd we took a sharp right to pass down the right hand side of Hurstwood reservoir. At just over 100 years old, the reservoir supplies Burnley from the 300 million gallons it holds, although at present the levels hold nothing like that volume. We continued further to reach the 16C hamlet of Hurstwood containing several grade 2 listed...

18 Walkers met at Garside Hey Road, or that is what it is called on Google Maps. The council however have called it Hartford Drive, with street signs clearly displaying Hartford Drive. Anyway, we all managed to meet at the right point, including Jonathan – Gerri’s – husband, and Ann – one of our pub walkers. We also welcomed back Arnold on his first six mile walk with us since his operation. From here we moved into the adjacent field for the group photograph, then I gave a brief outline of what to expect on the walk....

On a warm overcast morning, 20 ramblers squeezed into the layby at Barden Bridge, the decision for an early start was definitely the right one as Malcolm and Katie managed to get the one remaining space The route led us north on the Dales Way along the River Wharfe for a couple of miles before turning east and gently upwards at Howgill Farm, and then more steeply through woodland and onto the open access land of Barden Fell, where we had our coffee/ banana break. The walk continued with good views across the valley to Burnsall Fell. We then...

9 of us met in the rather lovely village of Hoddlesden opposite a row of rather unusual looking houses and in front of the Ranken Arms. The first question was why was the pub so called….after the man who inherited the Hoddlesden estate which led me very much down a rabbit hole of what was the estate in question. There’s an interesting gazetteer that some may be interested in but it fails to mention Hoddlesden Hall despite having it marked on the map. Anyway, the hall was built for Ranken in 1861 to replace the Hall originally on...
