Hoddlesden 26-07-2026 Leader Roy

9 of us met in the rather lovely village of Hoddlesden opposite a row of rather unusual looking houses and in front of the Ranken Arms. The first question was why was the pub so called….after the man who inherited the Hoddlesden estate which led me very much down a rabbit hole of what was the estate in question. There’s an interesting gazetteer that some may be interested in but it fails to mention Hoddlesden Hall despite having it marked on the map. Anyway, the hall was built for Ranken in 1861 to replace the Hall originally on...

Edale – 24/07/2026 – Leader Judy

14 made the effort to get up for an early start to this spectacular walk, on a lovely summer’s day, although it was quite cool at 8.30am and much windier than the forecast or any of us expected. (Look at Helen’s hair on the Mam Tor photo) We began by ascending the iconic Mam Tor, the first of our trig points at 517 metres, also known as the Mother Hill and Shivering Mountain because of its propensity for landslips. It sits between the gritstone dark peak, where we were walking today, and the limestone white peak gleaming at us in the...

Foulridge – 22/07/2026 – Leader Jean

On a cloudy, but warm morning 14 ramblers met a Foulridge Wharf. After the obligatory start photo, we left the village, crossing the A56 towards Foulridge Upper Reservoir, following a path towards Keighley Rd. We followed the road down to a busy junction, passing an old Toll House, before crossing the road, and down to join Colne Water. We followed the river towards Carry Bridge, enjoying our elevenses on the way.   From the bridge our route continued uphill to reach the minor road, eventually arriving at Trawden. We walked through the...

The Long Causeway 19/07/2026 leader Aly

On sunny Sunday morning 16 walkers met at a car park on The Long Causeway, high above Cliviger. We were joined today by my sister and brother-in-law, visiting sunny Lancashire for the weekend! Of course, as we were parked at the highest point of the walk, at 1148ft, it was to be mostly downhill from there-with a few up hills thrown in for good measure and a good up hill to finish, and after our start photo, with wide ranging views in the background, off we set walking along The Long Causeway an ancient packhorse route linking Burnley through...

Holcombe Brook pub walk 18-07-2026 – leader Bernie

On a lovely morning for walking, 15 walkers and 3 dogs turned out, but we were missing Glyn’s Frodo, who sadly succumbed to lung disease this week, so Bernie dedicated the walk to Frodo.  Also with us today were regular walkers Lorraine and David, on their first pub walk, so we hope they enjoyed it.  Certainly yours truly was very glad to be out with the gang again, and is hoping to be on Sunday walks before too long. The route is one that we know well, but it is varied, with nice views, so no problem at all.  Into Redisher Woods, with...

Ripponden – 15/07/2026 – Leader Judy

The weather forecast for Ripponden said full sun all day and rising to 26 degrees, so we all took loads of water and lathered on the suncream.  Several people chose not to go, fearing it would be too hot. In the event, 9 arrived at the car park, switched off car head lights, and hurriedly put on fleeces and, in some cases woolly hats, as we stood in the chilly low cloud. We set off early to follow the River Ryburn in the unrequired ‘shady’ but very pretty ancient woodland path. We ascended to Ryburn Reservoir built in 1933, stopping for...
