Not only, but also!

While Malcolm’s footpath clearance team have been busy, Danny’s stile repair team have not been behind the door either.  Since the middle of September, a further 4 stiles/gates have been improved, making something like 55 repairs since the team started – an amazing figure.

It is not obvious, but this work not only includes fixing the stile, with all that is involved there, but finding out who owns the land, and getting permission from them to make the change, is very time-consuming and frustrating.  So please raise a glass this Christmas to our wonderful footpath teams, to thank them for all their efforts on our behalf, and on behalf of the walking public.  The growing number of little green signs around the area is testament to what they do.

Apologies to Danny and his wonderful team of volunteer stile and gate fixers.  Pressure of other matters has prevented me from keeping up with your magnificent achievements since May 2024, but I am here now to say ‘thank you’ on behalf of all walkers, and especially those 700 odd walkers who ventured out on the Round the Hills walk on 1st September.  Without your efforts, one gate and one stile on the route would have been awkward at best, and dangerous at worst.  Without your efforts, and those of our group’s volunteers who walk the route to check the instructions and stiles/gates beforehand, Rossendale Rotary would really be struggling to put on this immensely popular walk.

As you will see below, 5 stiles and one gate have been fettled.  Looking at Judy’s numbers, it doesn’t seem as though Danny’s team will be short of walk any time soon!!

Below you will see before and after pictures of stiles in the Rossendale area that our footpath team have repaired.  We also clear overgrown footpaths, these being noted in a separate post.  These repairs have been funded by Rossendale Ramblers out of monies donated by our members, our sponsors – Stephen Barton & Rossendale Rotary – Rural Rossendale, and several generous individuals.

The grass isn’t allowed to grow under the feet of Danny’s team.  After a considerable amount of negotiations with the landowner, they have improved a couple of stiles at this spot.  For some reason there is no before pic for the first one, but the muddy nature of the job can clearly be seen.

Our muddy maestro Danny has recently sorted out a stile at the point where a path leads from the Limey Lane area up to Crown Point.  This was reported by one of our Rotarians, a keen dog walker.  Well done, Danny – my friend is very grateful.
