Thieveley Pike from Weir 07-02-2026 Leader Alex
14 ramblers and 4 dogs assembled outside Anna’s Cafe/Bar in Weir on a foggy morning, not good weather for the promised magnificent views!

Joanne was new to our group and was welcomed. Hope to see her again soon.

Fortunately it wasn’t raining and remained so apart from a brief shower.

After a trip through housing estates and ginnels we crossed the infant River Irwell passed by The Bent Estate and farms to access the ascent through a former quarry to The Limers Gate, one of the ancient packhorse trails formerly used to transport goods between settlements. We followed this all the way to Thieveley Pike.

Thieveley Pike at 1473 feet is the highest point in the Borough of Burnley and has a trig point as well as being the site of a bronze age burial and a beacon. There was no view today as expected, but I was able to point out what you could have seen. Not sure that anyone thought this was a patch on seeing the real thing.

Earlier I had warned the group and particularly those with dogs of the possibility of highland, and other cattle roaming these moors, which had been known to chase dogs. On the descent down the very muddy former tramway we encountered quite a lot of them, just visible in the mist and making quite a racket with their mooing. Fortunately they seemed to stay away and we made it unhindered to the site of the Deerplay Colliery pit head, which closed in 1968. From here it’s a road walk back to Anna’s where 12 of us enjoyed refreshments, food and good company.

Thanks to all for walking in difficult conditions without too many complaints.

Sue for backmarking

Aly for her admin help in establishing who was present and who was missing at the start.

Around 580 feet ascent

2.4 mph moving average

4.25 miles
